Genioplasty

What is genioplasty surgery or chin surgery?

Genioplasty meaning

Genioplasty, also known as chin surgery, is a cosmetic procedure to increase the volume of the chin or to correct its shape. This intervention is often combined with a rhinoplasty in cases where the nose is pronounced and the chin is «elusive « , which considerably improves the overall aesthetic result.

Purpose of genioplasty

The purpose of genioplasty surgery is to increase or reduce the volume of the chin to obtain a more harmonious facial profile. This type of procedure can be performed on both small chins as well as on asymmetrical chins that are too large. For these reasons, it is called reduction and advancement genioplasty. Changes to the chin, and possibly the mandibular arch, combined with other facial surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty, are called profiloplasty.

Genioplasty

When can genioplasty surgery be performed?

Chin surgery, or genioplasty, is recommended for several conditions, including a backward or receding chin, an excessively prominent chin, chin asymmetry, a small chin, or when there’s a desire to improve the overall facial profile.

What are the types of Genioplasty?

There are two primary types of genioplasty: sliding genioplasty and chin implants. Sliding genioplasty involves repositioning the chin bone to address chin deficiencies and imbalances. Chin implants, on the other hand, offer the option to reshape, enlarge, or push forward the appearance of the chin. Both types aim to achieve facial symmetry and balance.

Sliding Genioplasty: A Closer Look

Sliding genioplasty, also known as osseous genioplasty, entails a surgical approach to adjust the position of the chin bone. This technique is particularly recommended for individuals with significant chin retrusion or protrusion. The procedure involves precise incisions, bone repositioning, and secure fixation methods to ensure a harmonious facial profile.

Chin Implants: Shaping Your Chin

Chin implants offer a versatile solution to enhance chin aesthetics. Surgeons can sculpt, enlarge, or project the chin using implants made from various materials. Both surgical and nonsurgical methods are available, catering to individual preferences and goals.

What is the purpose and content of the first pre-operative meeting with the plastic surgeon?

During the first visit related to genioplasty surgery and therefore to the improvement of the facial profile, many parameters and anthropometric measures (precise measurements of facial proportions) are taken into account. The need to adjust the chin with a prosthesis will be evaluated, instead of harmonizing the entire mandibular arch. The patient will be informed of the potential outcomes, risks and complications associated with the genioplasty procedure. The patient will be examined by the surgeon to assess his or her health status, including appropriate clinical examinations. In collaboration with the physician, all aspects of the genioplasty will be discussed and the most appropriate type of procedure will be identified. Anticoagulant and antiaggregant medications will be temporarily suspended or replaced depending on the specialist who prescribed them as well as the pathology.

How is a genioplasty performed?

The genioplasty procedure is performed under local anesthesia and special sedation and takes an average of 50 minutes. Depending on the structure of the patient’s chin, there are two different intervention techniques.

Reduction genioplasty

In reduction genioplasty, the surgeon proceeds to make incisions inside the mouth and, with the help of a micromotor, reshapes the bone structure according to the general proportions of the face and the patient’s requests. Once the genioplasty chin reduction is complete, the incision is closed with stitches and an additional external dressing is applied to support the operated area.

Vertical reduction genioplasty

Vertical genioplasty is ideal for increasing or decreasing the chin when there is a discrepancy between the lower, mid and upper face. The vertical height is increased by adding bone or bone grafts that are fixed with tiny plates and screws.

Advancement genioplasty

In the case of advancement genioplasty surgery, silicone implants are used. Like genioplasty chin reduction, incisions are made inside the oral cavity; then, silicone support structures are inserted and properly positioned to reshape the facial profile, replacing an inconspicuous chin. An additional external support bandage is also applied in this case.

What was the post-operative course of genioplasty?

The Period in the clinic

After the operation, you will stay in the clinic for 5 to 12 hours. The period in the clinic is a crucial part of the process. Following the operation, patients typically remain in the clinic for a duration of 5 to 12 hours. During this time, medical professionals closely monitor your condition, ensuring a smooth and safe recovery. This immediate post-operative care is essential in ensuring a successful outcome for genioplasty.

Routine prophylaxis and recommendations

Routine postoperative prophylaxis includes antibiotics and painkillers. It is recommended that you eat only liquid or very soft foods to avoid chewing them. It is also advisable to sleep in a supine and elevated position to reduce genioplasty swelling as much as possible. For this reason, it is also important to avoid exposure to sunlight and heat, as well as the ingestion of hot foods and beverages because their fumes could cause problems. The patch should be removed within 5 to 7 days, and the stitches within 7 to 14 days. After removing the patch, small swellings and some bruising may appear, but they will be completely cleared up within 14 days.

What are the results of genioplasty?

The first genioplasty surgery results are immediately visible after the procedure. It is important to remember that the results of the treatment depend on each individual, that is to say, they may vary from case to case and depend on the patient’s state of health and his or her anatomical predisposition.

Can other procedures be combined with genioplasty?

Genioplasty combined with rhinoplasty

Nowadays, frequent jaw and chin correction interventions are performed to make the patient’s facial appearance more harmonious. Genioplasty is often combined with rhinoplasty. The goal is always to improve the patient’s profile.

Genioplasty combined with a face lift

This procedure is often combined with a face lift because it is precisely in people with an elusive chin that produces an early structural deterioration of the face. Advancement or reduction genioplasty is a permanent procedure, and there are few conditions for prosthetic replacement after a long period of time.

What is the scar like after a genioplasty?

The access route to the chin area for the placement of prosthetic material or reduction of the mandible (chin) is located in the gingival fornix or inside the mouth. The final result will be a small scar of about 4 cm that is totally hidden and invisible. There will never be any visible scars on the skin. Bruises, if they occur, resolve themselves in 7/10 post-operative days. Paraesthesias and diesthesias, i.e., local defects in sensitivity, always occur in the immediate postoperative period. These alterations in sensitivity return to normal within 1/2 month following the procedure; they are rarely long-lasting.

What Are the Benefits of Undergoing the genioplasty Procedure?

A chin of unusual shape and size can produce an overall appearance that is considered unattractive and, in some cases, can be a real problem for self-confidence and self-esteem. With genioplasty, the patient will be able to modify the structure of his or her chin and obtain a more pleasing and intriguing facial shape. Often, for a more satisfactory result, this intervention is combined with a rhinoplasty or a cheiloplasty, thus composing the profile plastic surgery complex.

What are the risks associated with genioplasty?

Genioplasty, like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks and potential side effects. These include the possibility of infection or allergic reactions to the implant material. Additionally, there’s a risk of implant extrusion or the opening of screws used in the procedure. Patients may also experience temporary numbness in the mouth and lips due to nerve injury. It’s crucial to discuss these risks with your surgeon and weigh them against the potential benefits before undergoing genioplasty.
