Ovarian cyst

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms in an ovary or on its surface. Women have two ovaries that are the size and shape of a fine. The eggs that develop and mature in the ovaries are released in monthly cycles during the childbearing years. Any women already have cyst in ovarian or may get ovarian cysts that appear and develop over time. Most ovarian cysts do not interfere with the patient’s daily life and are harmless. Most disappear without treatment after only a few months.

A ruptured ovarian cyst (ovarian cyst burst) can cause sudden abdominal and pelvic pain. It can be painful, but ruptured cysts usually heal without medical intervention.
However, if you experience severe pain and other unexplained symptoms, you should go to the emergency room.

What are the different types of ovarian cysts?

Functional cysts

Every month, the ovaries normally develop cyst-like structures called follicles. The follicles produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone and release an egg.
If a normal monthly follicle continues to grow, it is known as a functional cyst. There are two types of functional cysts:

  • Follicular cyst: Around the middle of your menstrual cycle, an egg bursts from its follicle and travels down the fallopian tube. A follicular cyst begins when the follicle does not rupture or release its egg, instead it continues to grow;
  • Corpus luteum cyst: When a follicle releases its egg, it begins to produce estrogen and progesterone for conception. This follicle is now called the corpus luteum. Sometimes fluid builds up inside the follicle, causing the corpus luteum to grow into a cyst;

Functional cysts are usually harmless, they rarely cause pain and they often disappear on their own after two or three menstrual cycles. Sometimes, in functional ovarian cysts, internal bleeding may occur, resulting in a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst. These cysts occur in women who are still menstruating and have not yet reached menopause.

Other ovarian cysts

The types of cysts not related to the normal functioning of your menstrual cycle include:

  • Dermoid ovarian cyst : Ovarian dermoid cyst develop from embryonic cells and may contain tissue. These cyst are rarely ovarian cyst cancer;
  • Cystadenoma ovarian cysts : These develop on the surface of an ovary and may be filled with watery or mucous material;
  • Endometriomas : these develop as a result of a condition in which uterine endometrial cells grow outside the uterus, endometriosis. Some of the tissue may attach to the ovary and grow;

Dermoid cysts and cystadenomas can become large, causing the ovary to shift. This increases the risk of painful torsion of your ovary, called ovarian torsion. Ovarian torsion can also cause blood flow to the ovary to decrease or stop.

What are the causes of ovarian cysts?

  • Hormonal problems: This includes taking fertility drugs that induce ovulation.
  • Ovarian cyst pregnancy: Sometimes the follicle formed by ovulation remains in the ovary during pregnancy. Sometimes it can be larger;
  • Endometriosis: Some tissue may adhere to the ovary and form a cyst;
  • Severe pelvic infection:If the infection spreads to the ovaries, it can cause a cyst;
  • Previous ovarian cysts: If you already have an ovarian cyst, more cysts are likely to form;

What are the potential complications of ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form on or within the ovaries. In most cases, ovarian cysts are benign and resolve on their own without causing any complications. However, in some instances, ovarian cysts can lead to potential complications.

Some of these complications include :

  • Ovarian Torsion : This is a serious complication that occurs when a large cyst causes the ovary to twist, cutting off its blood supply. Ovarian torsion can result in severe abdominal pain and requires immediate medical attention to prevent damage to the ovary;
  • Rupture : If an ovarian cyst becomes too large or develops weakened walls, it can rupture or burst. This can cause sudden and intense pain in the lower abdomen and may lead to internal bleeding;
  • Infection : In some cases, a cyst may become infected, leading to a condition known as an ovarian abscess. This can cause fever, pelvic pain, and general malaise;
  • Adhesions : Recurrent or long-standing ovarian cysts can lead to the formation of scar tissues or adhesions in the pelvic region. Adhesions can cause organs and tissues to stick together, potentially leading to chronic pelvic pain and fertility issues;
  • Impaired Fertility : Certain types of ovarian cysts, such as endometriomas or large functional cysts, can interfere with normal ovulation and fertility;
  • Torsion of a Pedunculated Cyst : If a cyst grows on a stalk (pedunculated cyst) and twists, it can cause ovarian torsion, leading to severe pain and reduced blood flow to the ovary;

Cyst Causes and Underlying Conditions : In some cases, ovarian cysts may be associated with underlying conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis, which can have their own set of complications
