IVF: What is the meaning of ivf?

IVF meaning

In vitro fertilization (IVF) allows us to reproduce in the laboratory what happens naturally in the woman’s tubes. Once the IVF protocol is indicated, the woman will undergo the following steps of IVF.

How Does the IVF Process Work?

Ovarian Stimulation

Ovarian stimulation is an important phase of IVF. This technique, aptly named ovarian stimulation, effectively initiates the production of multiple eggs. Typically, this process commences at the start of the cycle (on the 3rd day) and continues for approximately 10-12 days. To ensure progress, ultrasound checks are conducted every 2-3 days throughout the ovarian stimulation phase. Monitoring analyses are also done to adjust the hormone dosage.

Triggering

Once the follicles have reached the right size, the triggering will be done through the injection of a specific hormone. The collection of the oocytes or oocyte puncture will be scheduled 36 hours after the induction.

Egg collection puncture

This step is important in the IVF cycle. Egg collection takes place at the IVF Center. It allows the specialist to collect the oocytes vaginally using a needle. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and ultrasound monitoring. The oocyte puncture is done on an outpatient basis.

Sperm collection

Sperm is collected on the same day as egg collection by natural ejaculation. Dedicated sperm collection rooms are available at the IVF center. The man is required to abstain from sexual intercourse or from ejaculation for 4 to 5 days prior to sperm collection.
If the man has difficulty ejaculating in a natural way and feels blocked to do so, we can perform a TESA to collect sperm directly from testicles.

Fertilization

Once collected, the oocytes are put in a culture medium to be fertilized with spermatozoa, hence the term in vitro fertilization. The result is obtained 20 hours after fertilization. The embryos obtained will be kept in the laboratory under controlled temperature and atmosphere conditions until their transfer 2 to 5 days after egg collection.

Embryo transfer

Depending on the number of embryos obtained through fertilization, a maximum of two embryos will be transferred 2-5 days after egg collection. Embryos will be placed in the patient’s uterus. This procedure is also performed under general anesthesia and ultrasound monitoring. The embryo transfer is performed on an outpatient basis.

Embryo freezing

If there are any remaining embryos that have not been transferred, they will be cryopreserved or frozen unless the couple decides otherwise. Frozen embryos can then be transferred in another cycle. Several scientific studies have shown that the results obtained from frozen embryos are equivalent to those obtained from fresh embryos.

Pregnancy

Many couples choose to go home 1 or 2 days after Embryo transfer. Approximately fourteen days after egg collection, a pregnancy test could be done. Tunisia Medical Travel team will assist you in this process if you are still in Tunisia. We can only wish you good luck for your IVF attempt.

Who can have IVF?

IVF, which stands for In Vitro Fertilization, is a fertility treatment option that is typically recommended for individuals or couples who are facing certain infertility issues.

Some common reasons why people may consider IVF include :

    • Blocked fallopian tubes : IVF can bypass blocked fallopian tubes, allowing fertilization to occur outside the body;
    • Low sperm count or motility : IVF can help couples where the male partner has a low sperm count or poor sperm motility;
    • Ovulation disorders : Women with irregular ovulation patterns or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) might benefit from IVF;
    • Endometriosis : IVF may be suggested if endometriosis affects the natural conception process;
    • Unexplained infertility : When the cause of infertility cannot be identified through standard testing, IVF may be considered as a potential solution.
    • Genetic disorders : Couples with a risk of passing on genetic disorders to their offspring might choose IVF with preimplantation genetic testing to select healthy embryos.

    How does IVF work?

    You should plan to stay of 15-20 days in Tunisia. Depending on the country of origin, some couples may be able to shorten their trip by starting the ovarian stimulation at home in collaboration with their gynecologist. Egg collection and Embryo transfer will be done at the largest IVF center in Africa.
    Most couples chose to stay in a furnished flat next to the IVF center or the specialist’s office. Tunisia Medical Travel can assist you in organizing your medical stay.

    What Are the Procedures Involved in IVF?

    Exploring the procedures of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) unveils a complex and meticulous process. It begins with ovarian stimulation, where medications are administered to encourage the development of multiple follicles. Once the follicles are mature, ovarian puncture is performed to retrieve the eggs. These eggs are then fertilized in the laboratory with sperm from either the partner or a donor, giving rise to embryos. The embryos are cultured for several days before one or more are selected for transfer into the woman’s uterus. If fertilization is successful and implantation occurs, pregnancy can commence. Each step of the IVF process requires medical expertise and careful attention to maximize the chances of success.

    What should I choose? IUI, IVF, ICSI?

    After studying the couple’s fertility file, the specialist will suggest an Intra Uterine Insimination IUI, an In Vitro Fertilization IVF or an ICSI. If an IVF cycle does not produce results, ICSI will be indicated for a second attempt.

    What Can You Expect from IVF Results?

    The outcomes of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can vary widely among individuals and couples, as success depends on numerous factors. Following the completion of the IVF process, a crucial period of anticipation ensues. The first key indicator is the occurrence of a positive pregnancy test, signaling successful implantation of the embryo in the uterus. However, it’s essential to note that not every IVF cycle results in pregnancy, and the emotional toll can be significant.

    Additionally, factors such as the age of the woman, the quality of the embryos, and any underlying reproductive health issues play pivotal roles in determining the success of IVF. Some couples may experience success in their first cycle, while others may need multiple attempts. Understanding and managing expectations, along with open communication with healthcare professionals, are vital aspects of the IVF journey. Regardless of the outcome, each cycle provides valuable information, guiding adjustments to enhance the chances of success in subsequent attempts.
